Etymology: < scientific Latin Macrouridae, family name (C. L. Bonaparte 1838, in Nuovi annali delle scienze naturali (Bologna) 2 131) < Macrourus , genus name ( M. E. Bloch Ichtyologie (1787) v. 122; < macro- macro- comb. form + ancient Greek οὐρά tail: see uro- comb. form2) + -idae (see -id suffix3). Compare Hellenistic Greek μακρόουρος long-tailed (one isolated attestation), French macroure macrourid (1823 in Boiste as noun). Compare macrurous adj.
