Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Maiasaura.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Maiasaura (J. R. Horner & R. Makela 1979, in Nature 15 Nov. 297/2) < ancient Greek μαῖα (foster) mother or midwife (see Maia n.) + σαύρα lizard (see -saur comb. form).

Palaeontology.

A Late Cretaceous genus of large duck-billed dinosaurs, the members of which are notable for the association of some of their remains with nests containing eggs and young, with evidence of parental care and of colonial nesting at traditional sites. Also: a dinosaur of this genus.
