Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Persian. Partly a borrowing from Urdu. Etymons: Persian maidān; Urdu maidān.
Etymology: Partly < Persian maidān and partly < Urdu maidān, both < Arabic maydān. Compare post-classical Latin maydanum (14th cent.), Portuguese maidão (1608), French meydan (1653; later maidan (1721)).In quot. ?1551 via Italian maidan (late 15th cent.).
Chiefly South Asian.
Esp. in South Asia: a marketplace, park, or other open space in or near a town; an esplanade or parade ground.
