Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese maiko.
Etymology: < Japanese maiko dancing girl, spec. (in Kyoto and Osaka areas) apprentice geisha of about thirteen to eighteen years old (1678 or earlier as mahiko) < mahi- (now mai-), combining stem of mafu (now mau) to dance + ko child, girl.
A girl who is being trained to become a geisha.
