Etymology: < mail n.2 + coach n. and adv.
1. A stagecoach used primarily for the conveyance of mail; (subsequently spec.) a coach employed by the Post Office for carrying parcels by road. Now historical.The mail-coach system was introduced in Britain by John Palmer in 1784, and was superseded by the use of the developing railway system in Britain and elsewhere from the middle of the 19th cent.
