Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Madras.
Etymology: < Madras, the name of a seaport on the east coast of India (first recorded as Madrazpatam (1640)), now capital of Tamil Nadu (formerly also the name of a province; since 1996 known as Chennai). Compare French madras (1797 denoting the fabric; 1830 denoting the handkerchief, earlier mouchoir de madras (1798); 1812 denoting a hairstyle formed with a Madras handkerchief).
