Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French -culture; Latin -cultūra.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French, French -culture, and its etymon (ii) classical Latin -cultūra (in e.g. agricultūra agriculture n.), combining form of cultūra culture n.Earliest in the 15th cent. in the French and Latin borrowing agriculture n. An isolated early formation within English is perhaps shown by horticulture n.; other formations within English (in various senses) are found from the 19th cent.
1. Forming nouns relating to farming and cultivation; esp. denoting the cultivation, farming, or rearing of a specific type of animal or plant indicated by the first element, as apiculture n., pomiculture n., viticulture n., etc., or denoting particular kinds of farming or plant cultivation indicated by the first element, as mariculture n., monoculture n., mosaiculture n., etc.
2. Forming nouns relating to the propagation of microorganisms, as germiculture n.
3. Forming nouns denoting the development or improvement of what is indicated by the first element, as menticulture n., puericulture n., urbiculture n., etc.
4. Forming nouns denoting worship of or devotion to what is indicated by the first element, as demoniculture n., regiculture n.
