Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Major , -ist suffix.
Etymology: < the name of Georg Maier, Latinized as Major (1502–74), German theologian + -ist suffix.
Church History. Now rare.
A follower of Georg Major, who stated in 1551 that the performance of good works was necessary to the salvation of a Christian, and claimed in the subsequent controversy only to have meant that it was a necessary part of the holy life.
