Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin malacostomus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < scientific Latin malacostomus (J. Ray and F. Willughby Historia Piscium (1686) 24; < ancient Greek μαλακο- malaco- comb. form + στόμα mouth: see stoma n.) + -ous suffix. N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (mælăkǫ·stŏməs) /mæləˈkɒstəməs/.
Ichthyology. Obsolete.
Of a fish: having a toothless jaw; cf. leather-mouthed adj. at leather n. Compounds 3.
