Origin: A borrowing from Luganda. Etymon: Luganda è-mmayìro.
Etymology: < Luganda è-mmayìro estate < English (square) mile (see mile n.1).
A system of freehold land tenure in Uganda, introduced as part of the 1900 Buganda Agreement, which granted ownership in perpetuity to landlords and protected rights to tax-paying tenants. Also: an area of land (originally measured in square miles) allotted under this system.The mailo system was officially abolished by the 1975 Land Reform Decree. Although tenants no longer pay taxes to landlords, few of the other measures of the Decree have been fully implemented.
