Etymology: < Panjabi makkhanī < makkhan butter ( < Sanskrit mrakṣaṇa act of rubbing or smearing) + , suffix forming adjectives.

attributive and as postmodifier. Designating a dish (frequently of chicken) cooked in a rich sauce typically made with butter or ghee, tomatoes, and cream. Also: of or designating this sauce.
