1873 Jrnl. Bot., Brit. & Foreign 11 339 In Galway it is known as ‘makkin-bwee’: ‘makkin’ originally meant root, but is colloquially applied to the parsnip; ‘bwee’ means yellow—‘makkin-bwee’ in English is therefore ‘yellow parsnip’.
