Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; partly modelled on a French lexical item, and partly modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: automat n., automate n., automaton n., automatic adj., -ize suffix.
Etymology: < automat- (in automat n., automate n., automaton n., automatic adj., etc.) + -ize suffix, largely after French automatiser (a1784 in sense 1, 1926 in sense 3, 1946 in sense 2) and (in later use) German automatisieren (1906 in sense 2, 1925 or earlier in senses 1 and 3, in the latter sense apparently earliest in past participle automatisiert ). Compare ancient Greek αὐτοματίζειν to act of itself. With sense 3 compare earlier automatized adj. 3 and slightly later automate v.
