Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French magie.
Etymology: < Middle French, French magie religion of the magi (1535), magic (1547) < classical Latin magīa < ancient Greek μαγεία < μάγος magus n. + -εια -y suffix3.In the modern Romance languages the equivalent formation is the usual noun meaning ‘magic’. Compare Italian magia (14th cent.), Spanish magia (1615), Portuguese magia (17th cent.).
