Etymology: < post-classical Latin magisterialis (6th cent.; attested in British sources in senses ‘of a master’, etc., and also in specific use in alchemy in 13th cent. in sense ‘of superior quality’) < classical Latin magisterium magisterium n. + -ālis -al suffix1. Compare Old French magisterial (of a feudal vassal) very highly placed (c1260), also French magistral magistral n., which has figurative and extended senses similar to those at sense B. 1.In form majesterial probably influenced by majesty n.
