Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: auto- comb. form1, Greek μνήσις , -ia suffix1.
Etymology: < auto- comb. form1 + Hellenistic Greek μνήσις memory ( < an ablaut variant of the base of ancient Greek μιμνήσκειν to remember ( < the same Indo-European base as i-mind n.) + -σις -sis suffix) + -ia suffix1, after French automnésie (1877 in the passage translated in quot. 1897).
Psychology. rare.
The spontaneous revival of some emotion or memory, without any apparent association.Apparently only after Littré (quot. 1897).

1901 F. W. H. Myers in Proc. Soc. Psychical Res. 1900–1 15 Suppl. 405 Littré..describes what he calls the ‘affective automnesia’—or spontaneously arising flow of emotion—with which quite suddenly, and late in life, he remembered losing a young sister when he was ten years old.
