Origin: Formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymon: Latin de magna assisa eligenda.
Etymology: Shortened < post-classical Latin de magna assisa eligenda concerning the selection of a grand assize (lit. ‘concerning a grand assize [which is] to be selected’) < de concerning (see de prep. 1) + magna , ablative singular feminine of magnus great (see magni- comb. form) + assisa , ablative singular of assisa assize n. + eligenda , ablative singular feminine of gerundive of eligere to select (see elect adj.).

More fully writ de magna assisa eligenda. A writ directing a sheriff to return four knights responsible for selecting twelve others and forming with them the jury of a grand assize to try a matter of right (see assize n. 11a).

1959 Earl Jowitt & C. Walsh Dict. Eng. Law I. 168/1 In the reign of Henry II the tenant was given the right to ‘put himself on the assise,’ which meant that a writ of peace, otherwise known as the writ de magna assisa eligenda, was issued to the sheriff, whose duty it was thereupon to stay all proceedings in the court of the lord and to constitute the Grand Assise.
