Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin magnā cum laudē.
Etymology: < classical Latin magnā cum laudē < magnā , ablative singular feminine of magnus great (see magni- comb. form) + cum with + laudē , ablative singular of laus praise (see laud n.1). Compare summa cum laude adv.
Chiefly North American.
With great distinction: used with reference to a degree, diploma, etc., of a higher standard than the average (though not the highest). Also in extended use, and as n. and adj.: (designating) such a degree or diploma. Cf. summa cum laude adv., n., and adj.
