Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin magna precaria.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin magna precaria a reaping day (also precaria magna , lit. ‘a major obligation’; 12th–14th cent. in British sources) < magna , feminine singular of magnus great (see magni- comb. form) + precaria precary n. 3.
Feudal Law. historical.
A day on which feudal tenants, on demand, performed harvest work for the lord of the manor.

1706 Phillips's New World of Words (new ed.) Magna precaria, a great or general Reap-day; upon which, according to an old Custom, the Lord of the Manour of Harrow in Middlesex, formerly us'd to summon his Tenants to do 199 Days Work for him.
1835 T. E. Tomlin Law Dict. (ed. 4) II. (at cited word) In 21 R. 2. the lord of the manor of Harrow on the Hill, in com. Middlesex, had a custom that by summons of his bailiff on a general reap-day, then called Magna precaria, the tenant should do a certain number of days' work for him.
1848 J. J. S. Wharton Law Lexicon 397/1 Magna precaria, a great or general reap-day.
1959 Earl Jowitt & C. Walsh Dict. Eng. Law II. 1384/2 Precariae, or Preces, days which the tenants of certain manors were bound to give their lords in harvest time, also known as bind days. Magna precaria was a great or general reaping day.
