A device for temporarily enlarging the picture on the cinema screen during a film, using a wide-angle magnifying lens system attached to the projector, and a screen of variable size or position (see quot. 1930); the process or technique of using this device, an early form of widescreen projection.

1926 N.Y. Times 7 Dec. 21/2 Glen Allvine of the Famous Players-Lasky Corporation..called the idea or invention a magnascope. It is a magnifying lens attached to the ordinary projection machine.
1928 Daily Mail 12 Mar. 12/5 The manager..complained..that he had himself seen ‘Chang’ at the Plaza, and that the elephants he saw there were twice the size of those in the film supplied to him. He apparently had not heard of the magnascope.
1930 Times 26 Mar. 14/2 The Magnascope is merely an optical arrangement of magnifying lenses used in conjunction with the standard projector and with an enlarged screen, the surround of which is unmasked synchronously with the magnification of the projected picture and remasked as the picture returns to normal dimensions.
1987 I. Konigsberg Compl. Film Dict. (1988) 201 Magnascope was used in such films as Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoesdack's documentary Chang in 1926.., but its poor image quality probably caused the process's demise once its novelty was gone.
