Etymology: Origin uncertain. Compare molly-hawk as noun in sense ‘a heavy double-toothed mattock’ recorded from Norfolk in 19th cent. in Eng. Dial. Dict. s.v.Perhaps influenced in form by hack v.¹; however, Dict. Amer. Regional Eng. suggests comparison with ballyhack , verb, which is recorded sparingly in senses ‘to confuse (something); to blunder’, ‘to impose on’, ‘to beat thoroughly’. That word's parent noun ballyhack is well attested in New England as a euphemism for hell; Dict. Amer. Regional Eng. at cited word suggests a possible etymology from Irish baile town, village + hack , variant of heck n.³ and int.
