Etymology: < Middle French malandrin (late 14th cent.) < Italian malandrino (early 14th cent.) < post-classical Latin malandrinus (late 13th cent. in a Venetian source), probably < classical Latin malandria (see mallender n.; for the semantic development from ‘disease’ to ‘criminal’ compare pest n.) + -īnus -ine suffix1; compare Catalan malandrí rogue, ruffian (late 14th cent.).
Obsolete. rare.
