Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: mal- prefix, apert adj.
Etymology: < mal- prefix + apert adj., the sense perhaps being ‘improperly insolent’ (see apert adj. 5). However, compare Middle French malappert , used by E. Deschamps (c1346–1406) as the opposite of appert in the sense ‘expert’ (see apert adj. 4 and etymological note at that entry): it has been suggested that the English word might result from a similar sense development (compare maladroit adj. and malcontent n.1 and adj. for the Old French and Middle French use of mal- to reverse the favourable sense of an adjective).Palsgrave (1530) gives Middle French malapert as a translation of ‘Homely saucy to perte’, but this use of the French word may be affected by English usage.
Now archaic.
