Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Greek αὐτόμολος , -ite suffix¹.

Etymology: < ancient Greek αὐτόμολος deserter ( < αὐτο- auto- comb. form¹ + μολεῖν to come, go, of uncertain origin) + -ite suffix¹, after German Automolit (A. G. Ekeberg 1805, in Neues allgemeines Jrnl. der Chem. 5 444). The mineral is so named on account of the unexpected appearance of zinc in connection with spinel. Compare French automolite (1809 or earlier; < English). The α. forms are probably after French †automalite (1807; < German Automolit ), which probably shows folk-etymological association with automate automate n. and related words; compare German Automalit (1810 or earlier).
