释义

malarkeyn.

Brit. /məˈlɑːki/, U.S. /məˈlɑrki/
Forms: 1900s– malachy, 1900s– malaky, 1900s– malarkey, 1900s– malarky, 1900s– mallarky, 1900s– mullarkey.
Origin: Of unknown origin.
Etymology: Origin unknown.A surname Mullarkey , of Irish origin, exists, but no connection is known between any person of that name and this word. Another suggested etymology is from modern Greek μαλακός soft, or its derivative μαλακία , in figurative use (see malacia n.). Quot. 19242 is from a (nationally syndicated) cartoon by T. A. Dorgan (or ‘TAD’); in an earlier cartoon of his the form Milarkey occurs, presumably in context as a fictitious place name:1922 San Francisco Call & Post 9 Mar. 23 Listening To Two Blokes As They Try To Phone In A Joint Without A Booth...Aw, go chase yourself!!!! No, no, not you Central...Yes, Milarkey 609 J. What? Say?
slang (originally U.S.).
Humbug, bunkum, nonsense; a palaver, racket. (Usually of an event, activity, idea, utterance, etc., seen as trivial, misleading, or not worthy of consideration.)
