Forms: 1900s– manchette, 1900s– manschette (in sense 2, in early use).
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French manchette.
Etymology: < French manchette double cuff, oversleeve (1193 in Old French in sense ‘sleeve of a habit’) < manche sleeve (see maunch n.) + -ette -ette suffix. In sense 2 after German Manschette (first used in this sense by M. V. Lenhossék 1898, in Archiv f. mikrosk. Anat. 51 310) < French manchette. N.E.D. (1904) gives (for sense 1) only the non-naturalized pronunciation (maṅʃęt) /mɑ̃ʃɛt/.
1. An ornamental trimming round the lower part of a sleeve. Also: a ruffle (of hair, etc.) of similar appearance. Now chiefly historical.
