单词 marasca
释义

marascan.

Brit. /məˈraskə/, U.S. /məˈræskə/
Forms: 1800s marascha, 1800s marasque, 1800s marazque, 1800s– marasca.
Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian marasca.
Etymology: < Italian marasca (a1320; 1618 as amarasca ), of uncertain origin. Compare French marasque (1776 in phrase cerise marasque ). Compare maraschino n.It is unclear whether the first element of Italian marasca is < amaro bitter ( < classical Latin amārus : see amaritude n.) with aphesis, or whether the (late attested) form amarasca shows only the influence of a folk etymology. An Italic (or perhaps originally Ligurian) suffix -asco , -asca appears in several Latin words, e.g. labrusca labrusca n. Perhaps supporting an etymology < amaro , compare other cherry names with the basic sense ‘bitter’: Italian regional (Calabria) amarella (compare morel n.3), Italian regional (southern) marenka , Italian regional (Lombardy) marena , post-classical Latin amarina (1300), amarenus (a1570 in a document from Piedmont), French regional (Vosges) amrel , emrol , French merise (see merise n.).
A small black Dalmatian cherry, Prunus cerasus var. marasca, grown for the distilling of maraschino. Also marasca cherry.
