释义

Malayann.adj.

Brit. /məˈleɪən/, U.S. /məˈleɪən/
Forms: 1500s Malaien, 1500s Malayen, 1500s– Malayan, 1600s 1800s Malaian.
Origin: Apparently either (i) formed within English, by derivation; perhaps modelled on a Dutch lexical item. Or (ii) a borrowing from Dutch, combined with an English element; perhaps modelled on a Dutch lexical item. Etymons: Malay n., Dutch Malayo , -an suffix.
Etymology: Apparently < either Malay n. or Dutch †Malayo (see Malay n. and adj.) + -an suffix, perhaps originally after Dutch †Malayen (plural noun and apparently also adjective: 1596 in the passage translated in quot. 1598 at sense A. 1). Compare the place name Malaya (early 17th cent. or earlier).
