Etymology: Probably < malmok or similar variants of mollymawk n., after duck n.¹The folk etymology referred to in quot. 1885 is perhaps explained by Dutch mal mally adj. There is little evidence that the word was ever used in native Shetland dialect (the principal dialect name for the bird is maalie , mallie molly n.² and duck would be replaced by duke in true Shetland dialect forms); rather it seems to have been a name used by visiting fishermen.
