Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin maledictus.
Etymology: < classical Latin maledictus, past participle of maledīcere (see malediction n.). In quot. c1540 used punningly: compare maledictine adj. and n. See also maledight adj. N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (mæ·lĭdikt) /ˈmælɪdɪkt/.
Obsolete.
Accursed. Also as n.: an accursed person. Cf. maledight adj. (and n.)
