Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin mansorius , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin mansorius (1546 in Vesalius; either < mansare to chew (4th cent. in Nonius Marcellus), or perhaps < the related classical Latin mans- , past participial stem of mandere to chew (see manducate v.) + -ōrius : see -orious suffix) + -ous suffix.
Anatomy. Obsolete. rare.
Designating the masseter muscle used to close the jaw in chewing.
