Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French manteau.
Etymology: < French manteau (see mantle n.); in later use chiefly a non-naturalized borrowing. Compare mantua n.2, manty n.With sense 2 compare mantle n. 14, 10 and French forms discussed s.v.; Burton uses the word in a broader sense than that recorded in French. With sense 3 compare Persian (Iran) māntaw (a1966 or earlier; frequent from 1979; < French).
1. A cloak, a robe; spec. a loose gown worn by women in the 17th and 18th centuries (= mantua n.2). Now chiefly historical.
