Origin: Apparently a borrowing from French. Etymons: French mantel, mantil.
Etymology: Apparently partly < Middle French mantel mantle n., with preservation of stress on the second syllable, and partly < Middle French mantil piece of cloth, tablecloth (14th cent.; compare also Middle French (Fribourg) mantil bedcover, coverlet (14th cent.); ultimately < classical Latin mantēle : see mandill n.); in later use perhaps sometimes after French mantille mantilla n. (compare manteel n.2).
Scottish.
A cloak, shawl, or mantle. Also: †a bedcover, a coverlet (obsolete).
