Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by derivation. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: malefic adj., -ate suffix3; Latin maleficat-, maleficare.
Etymology: Either < malefic adj. + -ate suffix3, or < post-classical Latin maleficat-, past participial stem (compare -ate suffix3) of maleficare to enchant (3rd cent.). Compare maleficiate adj., maleficiated adj. N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (măle·fikeit) /məˈlɛfɪkeɪt/.
Obsolete. rare.
