Etymology: < Anglo-Norman malevoillaunce, Middle French malivolance, malivolence (14th cent.; compare Old French mauvoillance , malvoillance (12th cent.)) and their etymon classical Latin malevolentia ill will < malevolent- , malevolens (see malevolent adj.) + -ia -y suffix3; compare -ence suffix.Compare benevolence n.: English words which begin benevol- are generally recorded earlier than their counterparts in malevol-.
