Origin: A borrowing from Dutch. Etymon: Dutch malagas.
Etymology: < Dutch malagas, mallegas Cape gannet, Morus capensis (rare or obsolete) < Portuguese mangas de veludo ‘sleeves of velvet’, wandering albatross, Diomedea exulans < manga sleeve (see manga n.1) + de of (see de prep.) + veludo velvet (see velvet n.). Later remodelled after South African Dutch, Afrikaans malgas ( < Dutch).Both the Cape gannet and the wandering albatross (which is called grootmalmok in Afrikaans) have black wingtips, those of the former being more marked; quot. c1615 could refer to either bird.
