With reference to the legal separation of a married couple: with respect to domestic life and sexual relations.The reference is to a form of partial divorce or legal separation whereby a couple, while remaining technically married, are allowed or ordered to live apart.In English law this type of divorce was abolished by the Divorce Act of 1857, being replaced by judicial separation (see quot. 1857).
