Origin: A borrowing from Hebrew. Etymon: Hebrew māneh.
Etymology: < Hebrew māneh a weight used to measure precious metals and other commodities, roughly equivalent to 500 grams; compare biblical Aramaic mĕnē , Syriac manyā , Ugaritic mn , and Akkadian manū ; also Arabic mann (see maund n.2). The ancient Greek μνᾶ ( > mna n., mina n.) is a loanword from Semitic.The Hebrew word is rendered ‘pound’ in the 1611 version of 1 Kings 10:17 and three other Old Testament verses, as is Greek μνᾶ in its seven occurrences in Luke 19.
An ancient Semitic unit of weight: = mina n.The term was not applied to a coin, but when referring to silver it could represent an amount of money.
