Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French manège.
Etymology: < French manège (see manage n.2).The present word is a secondary borrowing which has resisted full assimilation into English, but which has nevertheless become the more normal form in the senses below: see note s.v. manage n.2 (Quot. 1644 given at sense 1 in N.E.D. s.v. is now redated to c1700 and retranscribed as menage : see β. forms at manage n.2).

1957 G. B. L. Wilson Dict. Ballet Manège.., an imaginary circle bounding the whole stage, so that tours en manège indicates that the dancer executes the turns while travelling right round the circumference of the stage.
