Etymology: As adjective < classical Latin Mareōticus (also Mareōtis , adjective: compare quot. 1697 at sense A.) < the name of Lake Mareōtis (Hellenistic Greek Μαρεῶτις ), adjacent to the city of Alexandria in Egypt + -icus -ic suffix. As noun < classical Latin Mareōticum, short for Mareōticum vīnum Mareotic wine. Compare Hellenistic Greek Μαρεωτικός, short for Μαρεωτικὸς οἶνος (in papyri).
