Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin mālicorium.
Etymology: < classical Latin mālicorium (in medical application in Celsus and Petronius) < mālum apple, fruit (see male n.2) + corium rind, skin (see corium n.). Compare French malicore, malicorium (1867 in Littré), Italian malicorio (18th cent.).Compare also classical Latin māli granati corium rind of the pomegranate (Scribonius Largus, 1st cent. a.d.).
Now rare.
The rind of the pomegranate, esp. in its former medicinal use as an astringent.
