Etymology: < post-classical Latin malignation-, malignatio (4th cent.; from early 11th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin malignāt- , past participial stem of malignāre (see malign v.) + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare Middle French malignacion malign influence (of a star) (isolated occurrence, 16th cent.).
