Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: French maligneux ; Latin malignus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: Either < Middle French maligneux (13th cent. in Old French in forms maligneus , malineus ; < maligne malign adj. + -eux -ous suffix), or directly < classical Latin malignus + -ous suffix. Compare post-classical Latin malignosus (late 12th cent. in a British source), Italian malignoso (13th cent.; in neither ed. of Florio's Worlde of Wordes).
Obsolete. rare.
