Etymology: < French malimbe (C. S. Sonnini in Buffon Hist. naturelle des oiseaux (1803) XI. 111) < Malimbe, the French name for (or an irregular spelling of) Malimba, a town in Cabinda, Angola (formerly in Portuguese Congo).

Any of the weaver birds of the west and central African genus Malimbus (family Ploceidae), which are forest-dwelling and have black plumage with red on the head or throat.
