Etymology: Perhaps originally in the form malinger (attested only by the probably erroneous spelling maligner in quot. 1755) < French malingre; later re-formed with -er suffix1 (-or suffix in quot. 17851), probably after lingerer n.French malingre is earliest attested in the mid 13th cent. in Old French as a proper name, and from the 16th cent. in Middle French as an adjective (glossed by Cotgrave (1611) as ‘sore, scabbie, ouglie, loathsome’; later in sense ‘sickly, ailing’); it is attested as a noun from the early 17th cent. in sense ‘beggar who by false wounds, etc., attempts to arouse compassion’; the word is in origin perhaps a blend of mal (see mal- prefix) and heingre , haingre thin, emaciated, probably with semantic influence also from malade malade adj. and n.
