Origin: A borrowing from Hausa. Etymons: Hausa mallàm, malàm.
Etymology: < Hausa mallàm (in the regional usage of Sokoto), malàm, form of address formerly applied especially to educated persons but now general < mállàmíi (in the regional usage of Sokoto), máalàmíi literate person, teacher < Arabic muʿallim teacher, learned person < ʿallama to teach, instruct.
In Nigeria and other parts of Africa: a learned man; a scribe, teacher, or healer.
