Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin manganium.

Etymology: < scientific Latin manganium (Berzelius 1811, in Jrnl. de physique 73 259) < either German Mangan or Swedish Mangan (see manganese n.) + classical Latin -ium -ium suffix.Berzelius notes that the word magnanium was earlier used also by German scientists in place of the longer manganesium (see manganesium n.), in order to avoid confusion with magnesia. N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (mæŋgēⁱ·niɒ̆m) /mæŋˈɡeɪnɪəm/.
