Etymology: < mant- (in mantis n.) + -id suffix3. Compare scientific Latin Mantides ( P. A. Latreille Genera Crustaceorum et Insectorum (1807) III. 87, after Byzantine Greek μάντιδες , plural of μάντις mantis n., variant of ancient Greek μάντεις), Mantidae (1826 or earlier).
1. Entomology. A mantis (mantis n.).The group includes the family Mantidae, but the word mantid is not generally restricted to members of this family.
