Any of various predatory insects of the suborder Mantodea (order Dictyoptera), which are typically slender and cryptically coloured, with a mobile triangular head, elongated thorax, and large raptorial forelimbs held raised and folded like hands in prayer; (originally) esp. the green Mantis religiosa, which occurs throughout southern Europe.
