Origin: Probably a borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian mantone.
Etymology: Probably < Italian mantone, glossed by Florio (1598) as ‘a great robe, with a traine’ < manto cloak (see mantle n.) + -one -oon suffix. Compare Spanish mantón shawl.
Obsolete. rare.
Prob: a large cloak.
